Obituary
Mattie Courtney Shepherd was born in April 1895 to Cornelius and Georgianna Shepherd. She was born a twin they were the youngest of sixteen children. Mattie and Catherine attended Caroline County public schools and later moved to Washington,D.C. Mattie worked as a nanny and her beloved Catherine worked as a baker in private homes. They lived seperately during their marriages (Mattie Shepherd became Mattie Truitt ) when both were married. But when they got older they lived with each other on California St., N.W., Washington,D.C. They enjoyed their lives tremendously. In summers they worked at Atlantic City, spending the evenings on the seashore eating ice cream with good friends. When they were in D.C. they loved to see Duke Ellington perform, but their all-time favorite was Doc Cheatham. After Catherine passed on, Mattie lived alone on California St. until she was admitted to D.C. Village Nursing Home. In 1996, she was transferred to St. Thomas Moore Nursing Home. Wherever Mattie Truitt went, she attracted many friends and admirers by her beauty, strong-will, inner strength, charm, and her deliciously naughty sense of humor. These were traits that remained with Mattie Truitt until the very end. Mattie Truitt passed away at Hospice of Washington. When asked how she remained so young, she would always respond "Honey, I don't know." In retrospect, Mattie Truitt focused on happy memories, making people laugh, eating healthfully, she never focused on her age. When asked how old she was, she would say that her mother never kept track of ages, so she really didn't know, but she must be about 70. Her strong faith in God was one of the ways she stayed strong. She is survived by hosts of nieces ans nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and great-great-great nieces and nephews, and will be intensely missed by everyone that she touched.
